Vascular Lab

Vascular lab refers to non-invasive exams relating to blood vessels, in which no dyes, x-rays or needles are used.

An Arterial Evaluation of the legs is a non-invasive procedure used to screen for peripheral vascular disease (PVD) or blockages in the arteries.

A Carotid Duplex Examination is an ultrasound test of the carotid arteries in the neck that lead to the brain. This study is used to detect a blockage or narrowing of the carotid arteries, which may cause a stroke.

Transcranial Imaging uses ultrasound to image and measure the volume of blood supply going to the brain.

A Venous Doppler Examination uses ultrasound to create a two-dimensional picture of your veins. This test is helpful in diagnosing a blood clot or a DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis.) This exam may also be used to measure the size of the vein being used for bypass surgery.

A Venous Reflux Examination is a non-invasive test that is used to test the valves in the veins of the legs.

About Your Exam How to Prepare Exam Results HVRA Locations

About Your Exam

Depending on the type of exam you are having, your exam may take 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Arterial Evaluation - The technologist will wrap a blood pressure cuff around each ankle, calf and thigh, and measure the blood pressure at these levels. By analyzing measurements made with blood pressure cuffs on the ankles, calves and thighs, narrowing of the arteries can be determined.

Carotid Duplex - You will lie on an exam table in a darkened room while the technologist performs the exam. Takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Transcranial Imaging - You will lie flat on your back for 45 minutes. The technologist will use a wand (transducer) placed above your ear to image and measure blood flow.

Venous Doppler - You will lie flat on your back for 30 to 45 minutes. The technologist will use a wand (transducer) to evaluate the vein for blood clots and valve function.

How to Prepare

There are generally no special preparations required for vascular lab exams.
