Digital Mammography

Digital Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system for examination of the breasts. The images of the breasts can be viewed on a special dedicated monitor.

Most medical experts agree that successful treatment of breast cancer often is linked to early diagnosis. Digital Mammography plays a central part in early detection of breast cancers because it can show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them. Current guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the American Cancer Society (ACS), the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) recommend screening digital mammography every year for women, beginning at age 40.

Our technologists are licensed and certified in digital mammography. Our digital mammography program is fully accredited by the American College of Radiology and approved by the FDA. Visit our Patient Resource Center for more information on breast health, digital mammography, biopsy and treatment.

Your mammogram will be read by a board certified radiologist. HVRA also offers CadX "Second Look" Computer-Aided Detection, which provides the benefits of a second opinion without any additional procedures or doctor's appointments.

About Your Exam
Your digital mammography exam will take approximately 30 minutes. Before the examination, you will be asked to remove all clothing above the waist and you will be given a gown that opens in the front. Please inform your technologist of any prior surgeries, implants, hormone use, and family or personal history of breast cancer.

During the exam, you will feel pressure on the breast caused by the compression paddle. The technician will apply compression in gradations. Be sure to inform the technologist if pain occurs as compression is increased. Usually you will have 2 views of each breast taken, one from the side and one from the top.

How to Prepare
Please note that your annual screening digital mammogram may require a written order from your doctor. Please check with your doctor before scheduling your appointment.

To prepare for your digital mammogram, simply follow your normal routine, including any prescribed medications. However, do not wear any powders, deodorants or lotions on your arms or under your breasts the day of your exam. For comparison purposes, please obtain any prior mammograms and make them available to us at the time of your current exam.

Some women with sensitive breasts may experience discomfort during the exam. If this is the case, schedule the procedure when your breasts are least tender, usually one week following your period.

Exam Results
At our Danbury location, same-day results are possible most of the time. Otherwise, you will receive a report by mail within 3 days. You will be contacted by phone if additional imaging is necessary.
