CT or "CAT" Scan

With CT, a computer generates a series of layered, 2-dimensional images (or tomes) that provide multiple, high-resolution images of the part of your body that is being scanned. CT enables doctors to detect a wide range of abnormalities with such precision that the technique has revolutionized the practice of medicine and has greatly improved the level of care provided by your doctor. CT is used not only to diagnose problems such as cancers, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, trauma, and musculoskeletal disorders, but also to monitor the progress of treatment.
HVRA uses High-Speed Spiral CT. Our CT technologists are fully licensed and registered by both the state of Connecticut and the American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT). HVRA is also fully accredited by the American College of Radiology for adult and pediatric patients.
A number of CT scans are available depending on the area of the body being examined: abdomen, chest, head, pediatric, pelvis, sinuses, and spine. For information on these specific exams, visit RadiologyInfo's CT Scan page.
Your CT scan itself will take no more than 15 minutes, however the films need to be developed while you are still in position on the table, which can take up to 1 hour. If you require a contrast injection, your exam may take more than 15 minutes. Contrast injections are sometimes required to see certain structures with more clarity. With a contrast CT, we may take pictures before the injection and then repeat the pictures again after the injection. This adds time and takes a bit longer than a non-contrast study.
During the exam you must lie still, however there is no discomfort whatsoever. CT uses radiation and therefore should only be used when necessary. Exposure is kept to a minimum to limit your risk. Please inform our staff prior to your CT if you are pregnant.
Depending on the type of CT, you may be required to change into a gown. How you prepare for your CT depends on the type of exam you will be having.
CT with Contrast: Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to the exam.
CT Abdomen and/or Pelvic: Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to the exam. Drink Barium Sulfate solution 2 hours before the exam. You may arrive at HVRA 2 hours before your exam to drink the Barium Sulfate. If your appointment is scheduled for 9:00 am or earlier, you must pick up the Barium Sulfate before your exam date and drink it 2 hours prior to your exam. Certain other scans may require no preparation.
Your doctor will receive your test results within 24 to 48 hours. You should consult your doctor directly to review your results.
CT is offered at our Danbury and Ridgefield locations.
