Bone Densitometry (DEXA)
Beginning at age 50, the American Medical Association recommends having a baseline bone density screening for detection of osteoporosis. To detect osteoporosis accurately, HVRA uses an enhanced form of x-ray technology called Dual-Energy x-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA). DEXA bone densitometry is today's established standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD), and is a quick and painless procedure for measuring bone loss.
The DEXA test calculates your bone mineral density (BMD) and translates this value into a number. This number can then be compared to your subsequent DEXA tests to determine the effects of osteoporosis on your body. Most often measuring the lower spine and hips, the DEXA test is the very best way for determining your risk of suffering a fracture in your hip or your spine as you age.
Our bone densitometry technologists are fully licensed and registered by both the state of Connecticut and the American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT). Visit our Patient Resource Center for information and helpful resources on bone densitometry and osteoporosis, including prevention and treatment.
Your DEXA exam will take about 20 minutes to complete. The bone density test uses a very low dose of radiation, exposing you to much less than a standard chest x-ray. A completely painless procedure, the DEXA test requires that you simply lie on the table on your back while the machine passes over your body. You will experience no discomfort during the exam. It is important that you stay as still as possible during the procedure to ensure a clear, useful image.
There is no preparation required for the DEXA test. However, there is a patient weight limit of 240 lbs for this exam, and you must inform your doctor or DEXA technologist if there is a possibility that you are pregnant.
Your radiologist will review the findings of the DEXA exam and generate a complete report. This report is sent to your doctor within 24 hours of the examination. You should contact your doctor directly to discuss the results of your study.
DEXA Bone Densitometry is offered at our Danbury and Southbury locations.
