HVRA Receives Echo Quality Assurance Recognition

Danbury, CT, May 28, 2008 - Housatonic Valley Radiological Associates (HVRA), with satellite offices in Ridgefield, New Milford and Southbury, has announced it has received accreditation for performing high quality echocardiographic examinations. HVRA received accreditation from ICAEL-the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories, and is among the first group of medical facilities in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico to gain such recognition.

Dr. Conrad Ehrlich, HVRA Medical Director, stated, "We are pleased to receive this recognition from the ICAEL Review Board whose members are providers of echocardiographic services nationwide." Celebrating its 30th year in the Danbury region, HVRA is an independent diagnostic imaging practice that offers technologically advanced High Field MRI, Multi-Slice CT Scanning, Digital Mammography, X-Ray, Digital Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound, Biopsies and Bone Density testing as well as Echocardiography.

An Echocardiogram is useful in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and has become an essential and integral tool in the cardiovascular evaluation of the patient. Nearly 10 million echocardiograms are performed every year across the nation. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, costing the economy over $83.7 billion dollars each year in health services, medications and lost work time due to disability.

"It's a safe, non-invasive procedure that uses high-frequency ultrasound and not radiation," explained Dr. Warren Sherman, Medical Director of HVRA Echocardiography Laboratory, and a board-certified cardiologist. "The procedure is painless, takes about 30 to 45 minutes to complete and provides a real- time video of the heart and its nearby structures."

In order to assure to the patient a consistently high quality echocardiographic exam with a complete and accurate diagnosis, ICAEL developed a comprehensive approach to the evaluation of echocardiographic programs. Accreditation by ICAEL is voluntary though a few health insurance companies are beginning to require it. ICAEL was established with the support of the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), the American College of Cardiology (ACC), and the Society of Pediatric Echocardiography (SOPE) to provide a peer review mechanism to encourage and recognize the provision of quality echocardiographic diagnostic evaluations by a process of voluntary accreditation.
